Extracts from the address of the Chairperson Pn Rosliza Yusof, at the 11th Annual General Meeting on 30th March 2010
To recap, NICS was founded with noble intentions as a forum for claims managers and examiners to interact and exchange views concerning claims services, fraud handling, claims leakages, etc. Today, the Society’s members include most of the insurers from the General, Life, Reinsurer and Takaful Sectors. With the support of member companies and the untiring work and effort put in by the current and past EXCO members, NICS have successfully carried-out various activities over the years that have proven beneficial to the Members. On this note, I would like to personally express my tribute to my boss, Mr Goh Ching On, for being a true leader and has tirelessly supported NICS with his vision, experience and knowledge. Thank you too to Mr Prakesh, who has been our appointed auditor since NICS’s inception. Mr Prakesh is stepping down and we will miss his professional contribution to the Society. Our best wishes for his future endeavors. With globalization, a highly professional and competent claims workforce in the industry is of utmost importance. Claims are the largest cost component in an insurance company’s operations and must never be taken lightly. With every new year, NICS oversees the changing of the Guard and we hope that the new torch bearers who are to be elected will continue to work diligently in fulfilling the objectives of the Society. Thank you to the previous EXCO members for their unstinting contributions despite their demanding work schedules. 2009 had been a momentous year for the Society. We had ambitiously mapped out a number of activities. However, a number of field trips, namely the visitations to Perodua, National Forensic Lab, MAS and Air Asia airports are still pending approval from their respective Management. We hope that the new EXCO will pursue these outstanding plans and bring them to fruition. Nonetheless, NICS successfully conducted a number of workshops with the first one on 4th June 2009 concerning fraud seen from different perspectives (internal investigation, insurers, industry, and the Australian experience). The second workshop was carried out on 23rd July 2009 on Claims disease management and disability assessment. NICS wrapped up the year with trainings on Professional Indemnity Underwriting, Maritime Civil Litigation, Reinsurance Claims Recovery, Death Claim Proceeds and Road Survival Skills. For 2010, we are pleased to announce that NICS will be hosting an international fraud conference in collaboration with BNM, MII & AMLA on 5th & 6th July 2010 in Hotel Istana. We hope that CEOs will appoint their Claims Managers to attend this conference, as we foresee many foreign insurers in the ASEAN region will be attending. This is a wonderful opportunity to exchange perspectives on fraud detecting, handling and combating in our respective countries. Before I end, tribute, I would like to express my thank you to the Secretariat from SJ Grant Thornton, Ms Nancy and Ms Nisha, whose efforts and commitment in working alongside the EXCO in a close-knit teamwork formed the bedrock for the Society’s success. I would like to commend Etiqa’s Management too for graciously sponsoring NICS’ seminars, talks and workshops at their premises.
