Extracts from the address of the Chairman,

Mr Melvin Oh ,

at the 10th Annual General Meeting on 31st March 2009

Since our inauguration 11 years ago, the Society today, encompasses member companies from the General, Life and Takaful Sectors. With the support of the member companies and the untiring work and effort put in by all the current and past EXCO members, NICS has successfully carried out various activities over the years that have proven beneficial to the Members.

NICS is now acknowledged as an Integral part of the Insurance Industry with specialized knowledge and skills with recognition coming from other than our parent body NIAM, also from PIAM, LIAM, MII, Bank Negara, Bar Council and the Palace of Justice.

NICS is also intended as a platform for members to interact and network effectively. In view of the above NICS has continued to extend invitations to Insurance and Takaful companies to join as Members, we will also study and put up a proposal to our parent body NIAM to open our doors to foreign owned Insurance Companies.

NICS has started to arrange for Workshops on subjects relevant to its members and the Insurance Industry. These workshops lasting from half day to a full day is done on an F.O.C. basis or at very minimal charge for the NICS members, we also open the workshop to participants of non member companies on a paying basis. The response from the members and the Industry has been overwhelming.

The Workshops that we held during the 2008/09 term were on the 23rd of June 2008, the topics were on Latest Issues Affecting Marine Insurance Claims and RBC.

The second workshop on 23rd of October was on the topics Liability Insurance & the Challenges, and the Human Genome Project/ The Decision of Lim Ee Seng VS Majlis Agama Islam WP/ Defination of Actively At Work.

The third Workshop was on the Topic of Marine Insurance - Hull & Cargo. NICS were able to hold these workshops on an F.O.C. or nominal fee basis due to the speakers volunteering their precious time to share their knowledge and experience with us as well as the support of our member companies especially Etiqa Insurance & Takaful in sponsoring the venue.

The Society had also organized a seminar on Leadership, Motivation & Dynamic Teambuilding Skills at Avillion Resort Port Dickson on 6th & 7th of August for its members.

NICS also successfully co-organised with MII with the support of BNM, AG's Office and PDRM the Anti Money Laundering and Fraud Seminar 2008 - Challenges In Dealing With Insurance Fraud And Money Laundering April 7 & 8, 2008 at the One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

Due overwhelming request from the members the Society after a 2 year hiatus revived the overseas Educational Seminar. An Educational & Field Visit was organized to Jakarta/Bandung Where the members were hosted by PT Ansuransi Jiwasraya and PT Kurnia Insurance, and later attended a workshop together with representatives of both companies.

The last function for the term was the 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner to celebrate the Achievements of the Society, this was held on the 13th of March at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and was graced by the Guest of Honour, Mr Koh Heng Kong our NIAM Chairman.

The Society's 10th Annual General Meeting for election of new office bearers for the year 2009/2010 will be held today. We hope that the new office bearers who are to be elected will continue to work hard and to continue the effort in carrying the Society to greater heights.

On behalf of NICS, I would like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to NIAM under the leadership of Mr Koh Heng Kong (NIAM Chairman) for all the assistance, guidance & support rendered during the 2008/09 term.

To Malaysian Re for all the sponsorships on the education and training programmes organized by NICS all these years which have enabled more members to participate and for NICS to reach out to other stakeholders in the industry.
