Extracts from the address of the Chairman

Mr. Melvin Oh,

at the 9th Annual General Meeting on 27th March 2008

NICS has garnered acknowledgement as a body with specialized knowledge and skills in the industry with recognition from other than our parent body NIAM, coming from PIAM, LIAM, MII and Bank Negara.

NICS has successfully carried out various activities over the years that have proven beneficial to the Members.

The main motivating factor for the formation of this Society was the need of a forum for claims personnel in the industry to meet and exchange views concerning Claims Management and other related matters such as Fraud and Claims Leakages.

NICS is also intended as a platform for members to interact and network effectively. In view of the above NICS has continued to extend invitations to Insurance and Takaful companies to join as Members, NICS is proud to announce that it has received affirmative replies from 2 companies, we would like to extend a very warm welcome to our newest Members AXA Affin Life Insurance Bhd and CIMB Aviva Takaful Bhd.

The activities that the Society had carried out during the 2007/08 term:

On 13 March 2007, NICS successfully arranged a visitation for its members to Puspakom, this was done to familiarize our members with the inner workings and services provided by Puspakom.

In collaboration with the Healthy Ageing Society, Medical Faculty of University Putra Malaysia and NICS on the 21 & 22 April co-organised a Seminar on “Assessing and Determining the Quality of Life for People with Medical Disabilities” which was very well received by our members, people from the medical profession and as well as from the legal fraternity.

On 23 July 2007, NICS arranged its second visitation for its members to the Perodua Assembly plant at Sungai Choh, Rawang.

In August 2007, NICS was approached by the Palace of Justice to provide feedback on the proposal to set-up a Special Court for Personal Accident Claims. The NICS Exco convened a special meeting and deliberated on the matter and responded to the Palace of Justice on the 3rd of August with its feedback.

Further on 11 September 2007, NICS had organized a half day Workshop on Anti Money Laundering for the benefit of its members, the speakers were Mr Jeremy Lee, Director Financial Intelligence Unit, BNM and Mr Subramaniyan, an Advocate and Solicitor. The response to this Workshop was overwhelming with nearly 150 members attending.

PIAM who had earlier in 2006 commissioned NICS to undertake a Project to study and come out with a report for Third Party Bodily Injury (TPBI) Fraud on behalf of the Insurance industry, this report which NICS appointed Ms Lekha Laxman from the Legal Dept of University Technology Malaysia to carry out the study with inputs from NICS was finally completed and submitted to PIAM on 28 September 2007.

On 30 January 2008, NICS also organized a one day Workshop on The Role of Forensic Science and Difficulty in Injury Assessment, the speakers were Mr Harcharan Singh Tara the former Director General of the Chemistry Dept and Dr Harwant Singh, Professor of Orthopedics, International Medical University.

In line with the Government’s call to promote road safety, NICS as part of its community social responsibility held a half day Workshop on Road Survival for its members on 3 March 2008, where for the first time there was no fee to be paid by the participants, this was made possible with the sponsorship of Malaysian Reinsurance Bhd.

NICS has also been invited by PIAM on 20 February 2008 to nominate representatives to sit on the PIAM Taskforce on No Fault Liability Scheme. Four representatives have been nominated to represent NICS in the Taskforce and the first meeting had been held on the 27 of February 2008, this is another great honour and recognition for NICS.

NICS will be co-organising with MII with the support of BNM, AG’s Office and PDRM a Regional Seminar on Fraud and Anti Money Laundering on April 7 & 8, 2008 at the One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

NICS would like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to NIAM under the leadership of Mr Sonny Tan (NIAM Chairman) for all the assistance, guidance & support rendered during the 2007/08 term.

To Malaysian Re for all the sponsorships on the education and training programmes organized by NICS all these years which have enabled more members to participate and for NICS to reach out to other stakeholders in the industry.

Thank you.
